cyn goustin, a supporter in minneapolis shared Minnesota Senator scott dibble's response to her letter. Senator dibble urges ACTIon!
Thank you for speaking out on the controversial decision to open up a wolf hunting season in Minnesota. This decision was made in haste and without the benefit of sufficient study and information about the actual number of wolves in Minnesota. Further, the methods allowed to kill wolves are disturbing.
Proponents of the wolf hunt claim, with no evidence, that wolves are becoming habituated and dangerous to people, that somehow a hunt will prevent them from taking increasing numbers of livestock and that hunting wolves is an important population management tool.
I had the opportunity to support and serve as coauthor on Senator Chris Eaton’s legislation to reinstate a five year moratorium on wolf hunting in Minnesota. It passed the Environment Committee on which I serve, but at present remains in the Finance Committee. Its House companion was not granted a hearing. I’m hopeful that the bill will progress next year, in the second half of the biennium.
However, I do not want to mislead you with a false sense of optimism. Hunting interests hold tremendous power at the legislature, popular opinion on this subject notwithstanding. Policy success will only overcome this stranglehold if a very large, comprehensive, grassroots, strategic campaign is launched.
Your voice is crucial in this debate. Please continue to call and write.
Very truly yours,
Scott Dibble
